How to create a sustainable mixed transportation journey? Mastercard and Siemens launched a unique hackathon designed to answer this very question.


This co-hosted challenge at the MindSphere Future World Series at Expo 2020 Dubai inspired teams to create a range of easy-to-use IoT solutions that help commuters make smarter and more sustainable decisions – at the touch of a button.

The Mastercard Future Transportation Hack powered by Siemens was a co-hosted challenge in a series of seven open-innovation competitions at Expo 2020 Dubai, the MindSphere Future World Series.

The hackathon’s results contribute to the mission of Mastercard: to power an inclusive, digital economy that benefits everyone, everywhere, by making transactions safe, simple, smart and accessible.

For this co-hosted challenge, hackathon teams had access to HERE Technologies’ open platform and services, including Maps, Intermodal Routing, Isoline Routing, Public Transport, and Mobile SDKs. HERE harnesses the power of location to help people, businesses, and cities achieve better outcomes. From rewarding low-carbon commutes to encouraging sustainable multimodal mobility, from tools to actively manage personal environmental impact to one-stop access to all mobility options, here are the creative solutions that impressed the jurors of MindSphere and Mastercard most.

Gamifying commutes for a sustainable future

The solution:

The startup has developed an innovative platform that motivates users to be more environmentally conscious and reduce their carbon footprint through gamification. Through low-carbon commutes, users generate "Carbon Credits“, which can be exchanged for unique rewards and experiences. The startup integrated MindSphere API and Services to manage user data and analyze transportation journeys.

The benefits:

  • MindSphere API and Services like Analytics and Identity Management Service helped to easily manage users and analyze their journeys.
  • Availability of employees' CO2 Footprint during commuting allows enterprises to enrich their CO2 measurements in MindSphere
  • Easy integration of 3rd party algorithms like Mastercard CO2 Calculator

Optimize commuting with cars in your company

The solution:

MazMobi developed a MaaS solution for vehicle sharing mobility to recommend the greenest transportation option for its users. The startup integrated IoT data from their application, batteries, IoT devices, and more in MindSphere to create assets, dashboards, and a connection between all devices and gathered data.

The benefits:

  • Connects all relevant assets of a commuter infrastructure (e.g. cars, car docks, chargers, etc.)
  • Uses MindSphere Dashboard capabilities and analytics to visualize CO2 emission per commute and analyze CO2-optimized options
  • Integrates MindSphere results into the Mazmobi vehicle sharing marketplace to suggest the best option

Sustainable commuting generates powerful insights for future city planning

The solution:

Ualabee has enabled two business solutions through MindSphere: a “white label trip planner” and a data analytics dashboard for sustainable analytics and urban planning to offset the CO2 impact of urban mobility.

The benefits:

  • Uses MindSphere Dashboard capabilities to visualize the mass behavior of commuters in your city/area based on a Mendix® app
  • Identifies optimization potentials for your routes and vehicles based on sustainability KPIs calculated in MindSphere
  • Integrates results in various smart city solutions based on Siemens MindSphere

Mointoring employees’ commutes to optimize your company carbon footprint

The solution:

With their multimodal MaaS application, the startup enables sustainable planning of commutes. MindSphere was integrated to analyze and visualize different transportation data feeds while identifying the optimal journey based on CO2 impact.

The benefits:

  • Connects multiple transportation databases to Mindsphere to identify and promote the best performing trips based on CO2 Emission
  • Builds a foundation to train a model in MindSphere to make suggestions on a CO2 optimized journey
  • Integrates the location services from HERE Maps® and MASTERCARD® payment solutions

Compensating payments and commutes with trees per use

The solution: 

The startup has developed the carbon trading platform eco2xchange within an application that allows users to plan multimodel transportation journeys while calculating environmental impact. MindSphere was integrated into the solution for analyzing data to identify commute trends.

  • Ready to use business model with debit card and compensation model
  • Using MindSphere analytics and predictive services to analyze identify commute trends
